Becoming Part of History
An opportunity has emerged allowing Heart of Russia guests only to meet and openly converse with former Soviet Premiere, Mikhail Gorbachev. He has committed to being on our ship, health permitting.
We've all said, "wouldn't it have been great to be the fly on the wall at...(name a famous meeting)!" Well, now you can meet the fly that participated in every foreign meeting for Gorbachev because... for an added bonus, we have secured the attendance of Gorbachev's interpreter, Pavel Palazhenko. Pavel has been Gorbachev's confident, translator and adviser even before Premiere Gorbachev met with President Ronald Reagan. Aboard our cruise you'll meet Pavel and have a chance on several occasions to hear him tell of those historic meetings and get a chance to ask him questions. He's a very articulate, intelligent and personable fellow. Another important historic figure.

This is a rare chance to meet and ask questions to a great leader, and such an historic event warrants this rare location: a TV studio created just for this occasion on a Heart of Russia luxury river cruiser. And, of course, we understand at his advanced years health can be a challenge so we've also invited his close confidant, Pavel Palazhenko, an extraordinary break for all of us to have him there. While Mr. Gorbachev can only attend one evening, Pavel and his wife Leesa will be aboard the entire cruise.
To secure one of the seats in the front rows call Elizabeth at
(801).669.1777.  By calling now, not only will you secure a close-up seat where you can easily ask question of the Premiere, but you will also be able to register for a cruise in the Heart of Russia. If you prefer to be "off-camera," there will be enough seats for everyone on the cruise.

Historic Meeting
Americans fascinated by events during the collapse of the Soviet Union and other watershed moments of the 1990s know it was Gorbachev who agreed to disarmament talks with US president Ronald Reagan and then purposefully dismantled the feared USSR.
This “invitation only” event and conversation with Premiere Gorbachev is exclusive for those who book passage on the Heart of Russia Cruise, August 20-Sept. 1, 2022.

A Man For His Time
Born March 2, 1931, he was the son of proud peasant parents in southern Russia between Ukraine and Georgia.
Although committed to preserving the Soviet state and to its socialist ideals, Gorbachev believed significant reform was necessary, particularly after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
     Quickly, he did the following:
  • Embarked on summits with Reagan to limit nuclear weapons and end the Cold War
  •  Allowed freedom of speech and press while he decentralized  economic decisions
  • Curtailed human rights abuses and allowed the break-up of the USSR
These bold actions and more led Marxist-Leninist hardliners to launch the unsuccessful August Coup against Gorbachev in 1991.

In His Own Words
Mikhail Gorbachev was the most forward-thinking Soviet premier in history and is remarkably candid in his comments to the press.
Imagine how even more forthcoming he will be in the private meeting aboard our Heart of Russia cruise.  Consider some of the answers he has already given to us:

    How did Russians like Perestroika?
“During the first years of Perestroika, young people and old reacted with enthusiasm...
After all, when someone has fresh air, they become vigorous and active . . .
However, some people wanted to seize power, and they were against Perestroika.”
    What of Putin today?
“Putin is a blow to democracy. Chilling effect on people. Some want to put me on trial.”

Aboard the ship you can ask questions such as:
  •      Has the Cold War really ended?
  •      Is Russia interfering in U.S. elections and if so, why?
  •      Is Russia on the path to prosperity?
  •      Can Russia and America become Allies?  . . .  and more!

Although the "studio" seats are limited, everyone will be able to be part of the "meet and greet" reception with Premier Gorbachev and Pavel Palazhenko.
